The Science Behind Ownist
Ownist has always believed that inner beauty starts with real biology—not wishful thinking, trend cycles, or a label full of “buzzwords.”
That’s why we don’t treat research like a checkbox.
We treat it like the backbone of everything we do.
Meet Sophie, Ownist’s R&D Lead—the mind behind our ingredient standards, our formulation logic, and the science-first approach that shapes every product we bring to life.
Q. Hi Sophie—can you introduce yourself?
Hi! I’m Sophie, and I currently work as Ownist’s R&D Lead.
I completed my PhD coursework in Biological Sciences at Seoul National University, and I now focus on research and development that supports Ownist’s product formulation and ingredient standards.
Q. You’ve spent years doing foundational research. What did you study?
I started with stem cell research because I wanted to work on something that could help people living with difficult-to-treat conditions.
From there, I moved into tumor immunology, where I studied how the body responds to cancer and how science could support treatment approaches.
Later, at my lab at Seoul National University, I worked on induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) for research related to developing personalized treatment solutions.
Looking back, I think I naturally expanded into different areas over time—following the question of how research can actually translate into better outcomes for people.
Q. Why move into product development research?
No matter where I worked or what I studied, my goal was always the same:
to help turn biology into something practical that supports healthy living.
But as I continued lab work, I realized something—pure research can be meaningful, but it can also take a long time before it reaches everyday life.
So I made a decision to shift direction.
Not away from science, but toward science that shows up in real routines—research that becomes something you can actually take, use consistently, and feel good about.
To me, that’s one of the most valuable ways to apply what I’ve studied.
Q. What made Ownist the right place?
As someone who’s used to experiments, data, and validation… even I used to feel unsure when shopping for supplements.
I’ve bought health products for myself and for people I love, and honestly, I kept having the same thought:
“Is this really the right choice?”
There were so many ingredients I didn’t recognize—chemical names that were hard to pronounce, and even harder to trust. And when you don’t understand what you’re consuming, it’s difficult to feel confident about it.
But Ownist felt different.
Ownist’s Clean Principles were clear and uncompromising, and as a product development researcher, I found that not only ideal—but genuinely necessary.
That’s what made me want to be part of this brand:
building products that feel friendly and easy, but still scientifically credible and truly worth trusting.
Q. What’s the hardest part about developing products at Ownist?
Ownist’s Clean Principles don’t allow exceptions.
They apply to everything—from early product planning to ingredient selection, blending, format decisions, and scientific validation.
And honestly… that means a lot of ingredients get cut early.
Even at the initial stage, many candidates don’t make it through the screening process.
As an R&D Lead, I focus on securing scientific credibility from the very beginning. That means I’m constantly doing things like:
- finding evidence that supports an ingredient’s functional mechanism
- judging the reliability of that evidence
- reviewing whether the ingredient fits the exact product we want to develop
- checking whether we can source a truly ingestible, high-quality grade material
And in this process, we’ll remove an ingredient if:
- it’s functional, but doesn’t meet our clean standards
- it seems promising, but we can’t secure a quality raw material suitable for consumption
- it’s commonly used, but the mechanism or impact isn’t convincing enough
- we don’t feel genuinely confident about it
Is it difficult? Yes.
But I truly believe the difficulty is the point. Because we should never recommend something we wouldn’t feel comfortable giving to the people we love.
Q. When do you feel the most proud of your work?
A lot of people think biotechnology is something distant. Like it only matters for hospitals, laboratories, or people with serious health conditions.
But my personal goal is to close that gap—to bring my field closer to everyday life. So I feel the most proud when I see that something I worked on is actually helping people. Like when someone shares positive feedback, or when I can directly feel, “This research became something useful to someone’s real routine.”
And truly—please leave feedback. Good reviews, honest critiques, even “I wish this part was better.” That kind of input helps the Ownist R&D division improve and build products that are genuinely more helpful.
Q. What’s next for Ownist R&D?
We want to keep proving something we believe deeply:
Real beauty comes from a healthier body.
Ownist already has a roadmap for the next several years—and I can’t reveal everything yet, but I can promise this:
We’re working to deliver the best possible choices across different wellness needs—so that whatever someone is looking for, they can trust Ownist to be the brand that meets it.
You can absolutely look forward to what’s coming.
R&D at Ownist
R&D at Ownist isn’t a behind-the-scenes detail. It’s a core part of how we build trust—with clarity, discipline, and real scientific intention.
And for Sophie, that’s what makes this work meaningful:
turning research into something you can trust, use, and incorporate in your daily routine.
